Cookbook Project: Back at it!

#1. The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning

This is one of my favorite books that I own, but I definitely think of it more as a photo essay than a cookbook. And although it’s always floating around in the back of my mind, the fact that the recipes were developed for large groups of people and therefore make large quantities of food escaped my mind when I picked the honey oatmeal bread to make.

Turns out that I took an accidental break from this project for… pretty much the entire summer. I still cooked and baked quite a bit, but for some reason, sitting down and planning things out from my cookbooks really didn’t appeal to me. That said, leaves are turning and days are getting shorter in Seattle and my natural response to the changing of the seasons seems to be diving back into my cookbooks!

To make up for the lost time, I ended up accidentally making a LOT of food from these few books.

Kneading the dough and getting the first inkling of just how much bread I was about to make…

Proofing the dough and the reality of the recipe hit me! It ended up making three gorgeous braids which have all been delicious, but I definitely could have cut this recipe down…

So. Much. Bread. So worth it, but still. So. Much. Bread.

#2. Six Seasons

Thank goodness my next choice was more vegetable-focused! I wanted to make the Burnt Carrots with Honey, Black Pepper, Butter, and Almonds from this book, although I switched it up a bit and tossed in some cauliflower, beans, and other bits and bobs from our veggie drawer.

I wasn’t worried about this being anything but delicious. Roasted veggies and honey is always a winning combo!

#3. Studio Olafur Eliasson: The Kitchen

This book was a treat I bought myself in grad school to celebrate the end of my thesis. I’ve made quite a few things from it but, similar to the first book in this post, always forget that these recipes are made to feed a lot of people. So there’s a lot of this spinach and parmesan polenta still floating around our kitchen.

These maybe aren’t the most beautiful photos, but this ended up amazing! We’ve been eating it with a fried egg and some hot sauce and I can’t get over how good it is every time. Thank goodness I still have a lot to work through!
